Upholstering dining chairs

The dining table chairs came with ‘fake leather’, which is actually quite common.  Fake leather comes in one of two flavours: PU leather (polyurethane leather) and vinyl bonded leather.  Vinyl bonded leather has leather fibers glued to the back of the vinyl to allow vendors to legally claim ‘10% genuine leather’.  If you inspect the back of the material it looks and feels like genuine leather but it is not.  PU leather is 100% synthetic as is the vinyl of the vinyl bonded leather.  In our case the vinyl started peeling of in flakes after 3 years of use.

As we are having guests over shortly I decided to do something about it.  I purchased a 1.5 meter by 12 meter long roll of upholstery fabric, a staple gun and fabric scissors.

Removing slightly corroded staples in a chair is no fun.  Here is the result of my handiwork:
